Tameo Kits recently released a 1/43 model kit (TMK 452) of the 1985 Toleman TG185 as it campaigned at the German GP. At this event, Teo Fabi secured Toleman’s only pole position, but unfortunately the car retired from the race. This car is also significant as it marks the first of many striking and memorable ‘Benetton’ liveries, with the flags of many nations scattered across the body work. Let’s open the box and take a look….

The kit is a completely new design and tooling, and follows Tameo’s typical approach with much of the kit cast in white metal, while smaller detail parts are provided as photo-etch parts, metal rod and wire mesh. Rubber tyres, decals and full colour instructions complete the kit

Decals are printed with vibrant colours and perfect register, providing the flags and sponsor markings for the white sections of the body

Decals are also provided for the ‘pin stripe’ demarcation lines between the white and black sections of the body

The full colour decal placement guide utilises the CAD model for the kit and provides a clear vision of the finished model

The instructions detail the assembly steps and painting instructions for all parts, as well as including some reference photos of the real car

The full spread of kit parts highlights both the high level of detail, and the relatively limited part count. The model is accessible to modelers with limited experience, with providing the perfect form and surface detail to satisfy even the most discerning builders

Main body part is beautifully cast and perfectly captures the TG185’s bold and purposeful lines

Access panel lines are finely cast into the surface of the body

Cooling vents are flawlessly replicated in white metal

Asymmetric details of the car are accurately captured, with venting details varying left to right

Inserts for the floor panels are wonderfully engineered and fit perfectly in place

Drivers seat is molded together with the floor section

Precision photo etched metal parts are provided for many of the smaller or thinner details, ensuring an accurate ‘in-scale’ appearance

The instrument panel illustrates the perfect casting and will look fantastic once painted and decaled

Finally, a view of the wires, mesh, tyres and drive shaft boots which complete the kit. We trust modelers will assembling this iconic single seater as much as we enjoyed designing and manufacturing it !!
