OPENING THE BOX – FERRARI 412 T2 CANADIAN GP 1995 – BY MICHAEL KELLY

Tameo Kits has recently released an entirely new kit (TMK 450) of the Ferrari 412T2. This grand prix winner has long been available in the Tameo range, however given the historical significance of the car and its popularity with modelers, the team decided to tackle this subject again, applying 2025 technology and processes to a now 30 year old race car. The car itself needs little introduction, however it marks both the last grand prix win for a V12 powered car and the only win for the passionate and popular Jean Alesi. …and it’s also just a GREAT looking car… Let’s open the box and take a look…

Inside the familiar, sturdy cardboard box are neatly packed model parts. The main components are cast in white metal, with rubber tyres, photo etch parts, various smaller detail items included, as well as full colour instructions and two sheets of decals.

Spreading out the parts gives a clear view of the kit design and part breakdown. Each component has been designed and manufactured to utilise the best available processes and materials. Cast metal for parts with more complex multi-plane items, and etched parts for those items that are thin, flat or require different metal properties (eg suspension arms).

The photo etch parts are extensive and feature excellent surface details.

The main body casting perfectly captures the overall shape of the 412T2 as well as the fine surface details, including panel lines.

The instructions provide clear step-by-step painting and assembly guidance – as well as a vision of the completed model.

Focusing on the photo etch components, a significant feature of this kit is the use of press-formed components.

Here the metal is etched to shape, then a separate process is employed to pre-form the components to perfectly capture the shapes of the car. This adds time and complexity to the kit manufacture, but presents modelers with a beautiful part.

The pressed etched technique is also applied to the vanes sitting around the front suspension – here with compound curves.

A close up of the body casting highlights areas where the re-design model has improved detail from the original. The ducts for the oil coolers are deep and sharp and will look wonderful when painted and with the cooler faces (etched parts) added.

Cast metal wheels perfectly capture the rim depth and profile and the fine and complex shape of the spokes.

Decals are beautifully printed and provide a comprehensive set of sponsor markings and matt black surfaces for ‘true to scale’ depiction of the exposed wing components.

Another innovation with this kit is a cast clear rear rain light lens, capturing the shape of this item perfectly.

Finally, we take a look at the casting of the diffuser and V12 exhaust pipes. An emotive note to conclude on.

Hopefully modelers enjoy this new kit.
