The 1981 Renault RE30 is a Formula 1 single-seater developed and used by the Equipe Renault Elf team during the 1981 season, marking a significant evolution in the team’s range of turbocharged cars thanks to a more compact aluminium monocoque chassis designed by engineers Bernard Dudot and Michel Tétu. Introduced after the first five races to replace the less competitive RE20B, the Renault RE30 was fitted with a mid-mounted 1.5-litre V6 turbo engine producing around 540 horsepower, mated to a five-speed Hewland gearbox, and featured improved aerodynamics and optimised weight distribution for better handling on different circuits. Driven by Alain Prost and René Arnoux, the car secured three victories, all achieved by Prost at the French Grand Prix at the Dijon circuit, the Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort circuit and the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza National Autodrome, as well as several podium finishes and pole positions, contributing to Renault’s third place in the Constructors’ Championship with 54 points. Despite reliability issues with the turbo system, the performance of the 1981 Renault RE30 highlighted Renault’s pioneering role in turbocharger technology, paving the way for further developments in the Renault RE30B variant the following year.
